Back Galley Café and Catering is not only a fabulous café located in the heart of Camden, it is an established community hub. Co-owners Ben and Sarah Von Wartburg expanded the business 2 years ago and now cater for corporate events, weddings and parties in the Macarthur area. They have a mobile café as well.
Some eight years ago Back Galley Café joined the MWLP Linking Youth Work Placement Program and began offering one student each week the opportunity to get ‘hands-on’ experience in the workplace.
The students are in Years 11 and 12 and studying Hospitality (both front of house and back of house) as part of their Higher School Certificate and work placement is a mandatory requirement.
Ben says “We were students once and struggled to get experience, so we wanted to get involved. The students keep the café young and we learn a lot from them. The majority of students are really good.”
Ben has a message for businesses who are not yet part of the MWLP Linking Youth Work Placement Program, “Many small business owners have no time, so if they want access to young people, MWLP manage and streamline everything. We don’t interview, so this program is very effective. Actions speak louder than words so when the students turn up we look for a combination of personality, initiative, stamina and a cultural fit. We tailor the work to suit the student and it’s very rewarding to see the massive difference in the students from day one to day five.”
Ben adds “We have hired quite a few students as casuals and really recommend this program.”
