Student Voice

Young People

What is the importance of student voice?

'Student Voice' is a significant asset within a schooling community, and it cannot be ignored. By involving student voice into your community, it provides:

  • Students with the opportunity to have a direct say
  • Development and enhancement of skills (Leadership, social etc)
  • Self-Empowerment of the individual
  • Active participation and interaction
  • A different outlook
  • A tool and viable resource that can see a difference being made

Why is student voice important to MWLP?

MWLP bases its work around students and what benefits them. The views of the students will provide valuable input for MWLP. The more that we allow the students to share their views, the more specifically the needs of the younger generation can be met more effectively, and are essentially well catered for. The future of our community is the youth, and we need to look after them!

A New Initiative: 'Linking Youth through Student Voice'

This MWLP initiative recognises student voice as an effective device in understanding the needs of youth in the community. 'Linking Youth through Student Voice' is a program tailored to empower the students to be pro-actively involved in their identification and problem solving of issues that are relevant to them.

This multi-stage program will essentially see students as representatives of their school community, talking about issues that matter and contributing towards achievable goals.

How to connect with your peers?

Every school is not the same, and all will respond differently to the various methods that are used. Here are just a few things to think about:

  • Remember the more creative, the better the results.
  • You need effective planning
  • Work as a team
  • Explain the purpose
  • Utilise your results

Testimonials

“As part of my Business Services subject for the HSC, I had the opportunity to do workplace learning through MWLP. I was really nervous to start off with, but I had such an amazing experience.

The confidence I gained that week gave me the confidence to get my job at MG My Gateway and I really love it.”

Emma Milton from St. Patrick’s College.

“In my senior years at school I did workplace learning with Peter Worthington from Camden. It was a hands-on experience and I quickly discovered that the building game was for me. I was lucky because Peter offered me an apprenticeship as a carpenter. I’d like to thank MWLP for making this possible.”

Ben Healy from Broughton Anglican College.
