April 2012 – Newman & Barker Plumbing

Outstanding Business of the Month: Newman & Barker Plumbing

Newman & Barker Plumbing is a family run business established in 1988.  With a staff of seven and a fleet of five vehicles on the road, they are Maintenance Plumbing Specialists.

Newman & Barker Plumbing has been offering Year 11 and 12 students, who are studying Construction as part of their HSC, the opportunity to gain real ‘hands on’ learning in their workplace since 2008.

Owner/Director Wayne Newman vividly remembers when someone took him ‘under their wings’ and gave him the chance to experience plumbing.  Wayne loved it and now wants to extend that same opportunity to others.  He hopes the experience will help them decide if plumbing is their career choice when they complete school.

Wayne says “Students get down and dirty.  They assist the tradesmen, dig trenches and lay pipes.  I particularly enjoy the look and reaction of some of the students when they attend their first blocked sewer – it’s like they are saying you can’t be serious!!”

Wayne thinks the MWLP program is fantastic and he has advice for businesses not yet taking students.  “Get on board.  It’s a great experience for both yourself and the work placement students” he adds.

As this month’s outstanding winner, Newman & Barker Plumbing will receive profiling in the Macarthur Chronicle, one month’s free advertising on C91.3FM, exposure on www.mwlp.com.au and thanks to United Cinemas Narellan, Grand Seating movie tickets.
