Myrtle Cottage Group is a community organisation providing centre based services to people who are frail aged, younger people with disabilities and people with dementia.
They employ 18 staff and 95 volunteers and are celebrating their 40th anniversary this year.
Myrtle Cottage has been offering Year 11 and 12 students, who are studying Business Services as part of their Higher School Certificate, week-long work placements since 2011.
Students learn about Myrtle Cottage and the wonderful programs they run for the community. Students are responsible for creating their bi-monthly newsletter. They learn time management skills and how to use their initiative, whilst Myrtle Cottage staff get to refine their supervisory skills and review administration protocols.
Elizabeth Delcasse, Manager, says “The work placement is a wonderful opportunity for students to engage with the aged, break down barriers and build a rapport. There are so many benefits that work both ways. We learn a lot from youth. They keep us young. The students grow in confidence by the end of the week and they even teach us a few tips.”
Margaret Donnelly, Assistant Manager, has a message for businesses that may be interested in hosting students, “These students are our next generation of employees, so if we can give them real experiences to develop skills and employability attributes, then they could be our next staff member.”
