Dumaresq Street Cinema is a budget movie theatre showcasing the latest blockbusters. It provides affordable entertainment for the whole family. Since re-opening in 1991, the Cinema has built up a strong presence in Macarthur, employing a staff of over 30 and adding an additional cinema.
Current owners Allison and Greg Moore enjoy giving back to the community. They have been offering week long work placements to Year 11 and 12 students, who are studying Entertainment as part of their Higher School Certificate, since 2003!
Allison says “We empathise with our region’s young people. We had teenage children and knew how hard it was to get them opportunities to become skilled in the work place. We enjoy giving students the opportunity to put what they are learning in the classroom to good use in the work force. It is also a good way to identify potential employees. If they work well in the week they are with us, they stand a good chance of being hired.”
The students collect the tickets at the door, are responsible for opening and closing the cinema doors, show patrons to their seats, keep the foyer clean and tidy and stock the shelves.
Allison encourages other businesses to join the MWLP Linking Youth program. She adds “It is the right thing to do. We all had to start out in the work force. It’s all about giving them a go.”
