Outstanding Business of the Month: The Gardens Restaurant
MWLP has over 200 Macarthur businesses taking on work placement students. WHY? Because it’s a fantastic program that boasts tremendous benefits for both business and students.
Each month MWLP select a Business of the Month from comments made by the students following their work placement.
This month’s winner “The Gardens Restaurant” has been offering students work placement since they opened their restaurant in 2001. They are so impressed with the quality and ability of these students over 20 have been recruited by them, including every apprentice chef they have employed.
What a remarkable outcome! Local students are given an exceptional opportunity to acquire vital hands on skills in the workplace whilst studying Hospitality at school. They can then demonstrate their knowledge and skills. Should they be offered a position we have a wonderful result for the Macarthur economy – highly skilled, local, young people being retained by local business!
Owner/Manager of The Gardens Restaurant, Kylie Brooks, can’t speak highly enough of the MWLP program. Kylie says, “It provides great training for students and allows us to assess them in the workplace. There’s no better way to interview. Previously we employed qualified chefs, but found it much better to recruit these brilliant MWLP students and train them our way.”
Liz Turner, 2nd Year Apprentice, wasn’t sure which career to pursue. After spending five days work placement at The Gardens Restaurant, she knew. She has been there for over four years and is glad she had the opportunity to have a “test run” in the hospitality field.
The Gardens Restaurant commenced operations 18 years ago as a small kiosk. It then expanded to a Cafe and in 2001 they built the beautifully appointed restaurant situated in the stunning Mt. Annan Botanic Garden. The restaurant was voted Best Family Restaurant in Australia in 2008 by the Restaurant & Catering Association of Australia.
As this month’s extraordinary winner, The Gardens Restaurant will receive profiling in the Macarthur Chronicle, one month’s free advertising on C91.3FM, exposure on MWLP’s website and thanks to Greater Union Campbelltown, Gold Class movie tickets.
