November 2008 – Spotlight Campbelltown

Outstanding Business of the Month: Spotlight Campbelltown

Spotlight Campbelltown is part of Spotlight Australia – Australia’s largest fabric, craft & home interior superstores. They originally opened in Macarthur Square in 1993 and in 1996 relocated to Queen Street Campbelltown.

Department Manager of Craft/Party, Kelly has been involved with the Macarthur Workplace Learning Program for the past eight years and since then has provided fantastic work placement opportunities for some 150 Year 11 and Year 12 students.

These students are studying Retail as part of their HSC and a mandatory requirement of the course is to complete one week’s work placement in Year 11 and an additional week in Year 12.

From the feedback MWLP has received the students love working at Spotlight. Staff at Spotlight take the time to induct MWLP students exposing them to the many facets of retailing.

Kelly enjoys being involved with MWLP as she believes in giving back to the community. The students are enthusiastic, helpful and keen to learn. What Kelly particularly appreciates is the fact that “the students already have some experience in retail. They know about customer service and it’s great to give the students the opportunity to put their knowledge and training into practice. After their week long work placement they are more confident and work ready. In fact we have taken quite a few students on as casuals following their work placement”, Kelly says.

Spotlight Campbelltown has also given students a fantastic insight into some of their marketing strategies. Last sale day two students volunteered to blow up some 300 balloons, wore the 20% off t-shirts and got involved in customer relations.

The feedback from these students has been so captivating that it has lead to Spotlight Campbelltown becoming MWLPs November Business of the Month. Winning this Award entitles Spotlight Campbelltown to receive a 30 second commercial aired daily on C91.3fm, profiling in the Macarthur Chronicle and on the MWLP website and, thanks to Greater Union Macarthur, luxury gold class passes to the movies.

MWLP students truly value their work placement. If they don’t complete it successfully they don’t get their HSC so they are keen to make an impression.
