Outstanding Business of the Month: Medicar Smash Repairs
Ray Lauricella Owner/Director of Medicar Smash Repairs is an ardent fan of Macarthur and its youth. He’s been taking on Year 10 work experience students for years and in March 2008 joined Macarthur Workplace Learning Program (MWLP) to take on HSC students studying a newly created VET framework – Automotive.
Since then Ray has had some fabulous students. What he particularly likes about the MWLP program is that the students already have basic skills. They are work-ready and pick the work up quickly.
Ray recalls one of his more memorable students was a female with beautifully groomed and polished finger nails who later proved she was more than willing to get her hands dirty. Ray was blown away when, on day 2 of her week long work placement, she asked when could she paint a car? She was so passionate that Ray put her in a mini booth and allowed her to paint under a bonnet. Ray loves to give kids a go. His advice to students is “Don’t be shy. Try everything. Earn your supervisors respect and you’ll be taught well.”
Ray says the MWLP program “is a great avenue for kids to experience something I never did. Students actually get to work in the industry to see if they’re going to like it.”
Medicar Smash Repairs has been operating in Blaxland Road, Campbelltown since 1999 and repairs motor vehicles for insurance companies. Medicar also has branches in Revesby and St. Marys and between the three shops, employs some 45 – 50 staff.
Ray lives in Narellan Vale and all his staff live locally. He loves Macarthur and enjoys being close to work. He is a firm believer of employing locally and supporting local business as local business supports him.
His advice to other Macarthur Businesses is to “get involved with the MWLP program. If we don’t take on students like this our industry will starve. Look at the big picture. Tradesmen are scarce and this is a great way to keep in touch with youth and get to see students work before actually employing them. Someone gave me an opportunity and I’m more than happy where I am today. Give youth a go – they are your future.”
As MWLP Business of the Month, Medicar has won 2 gold class movie tickets thanks to Greater Union Macarthur, profiling in the Macarthur Chronicle and a month long radio campaign with C91.3fm.
MWLP can offer Macarthur Businesses enthusiastic and skilled students willing to work in your organisation fully insured and free of charge. We offer frameworks in not only automotive, but business services, construction, metal and engineering, information technology, hospitality, retail, entertainment and primary industries.
