Outstanding Business of the Month: Macarthur Centre for Sustainable Living
This month’s worthy winner is community driven with the aim of promoting education for sustainable homes and gardens.
Centre Co-ordinator, Helen Byfield-Fleming has a background in teaching and it certainly shows in her passion for the education of youth. She puts her time and energy into offering students work placement opportunities, not only in Tourism, but in Business Services and Primary Industries as well. Helen tailors the work to their HSC curriculum and the Tourism students get involved in festivals, market days and school workshops. She enjoys providing a supportive work environment for Year 11 and 12 students before they commence work in the ‘real’ world.
Helen says “The students are amazing. They’re funny, kind, generous and brilliant.”
She has a message for businesses that aren’t yet involved in this program “Give the students a go. Your business may learn something new – these kids are our future.”
