Stellino Carpentry & Maintenance has been established for some 40 years. They specialise in joinery, upmarket fixing and restoration. Their current project is restoring Gledswood Homestead that was built in 1810.
Owner/Director Gary Stellino has been offering work placement to students in Years 11 and 12 who are studying Construction as part of their HSC. In fact, one student each week since 2016 has been given this opportunity.
Gary says “Ours is a specialised craft that needs to be handed down to the next generation. By hosting work placement students we get to assess them in the week they are with us. I adapt the work to suit the student. I get them to sweep first to assess their attitude then they get to operate battery tools like cordless drills and impact drivers. They learn how to assist a tradesman by selecting and handing them the correct tools in the correct fashion.”
Gary has a message for businesses that aren’t involved in work placement. “Give back to the community. Potential hosts have knowledge and experience that should be shared. Open kids’ eyes. Showcase your trade. Teach them how to interact with people.”
He adds “It is a great way to look for employees. We have offered casual work to a few students in the past three years.”
Business of the Month winners are promoted on our website, Facebook and LinkedIn. Their article is published in our monthly e-newsletter which is distributed to hundreds of our stakeholders.
Winners also receive a gift voucher valued at $100.
