Business of the Month February 2019

The Mill Hotel located in Milperra features four bars, an outdoor entertainment stage, multiple beer gardens, bistro, kids play area and much more.

They are passionate about youth and support students in Year 11 and 12 who are studying Hospitality as part of their Higher School Certificate.

Two students each week are given the opportunity to put what they are learning in the classroom to good use in the kitchen.

Head Chef, Kyle Quy believes the work placement program has many benefits. He says “I can bring students into my industry and give them an insight into what actually happens in the kitchen. It’s a great way to distinguish who want to be in the industry. We have two additional people in the kitchen helping prep each week and from that we can hire staff. We currently have three students from the program working with us.”

Caitlin Flannery and Maia Nelson from East Hills Girls High both undertook work placement. Maia at the Mill and Caitlin at ‘sister’ company Padstow Park Hotel. Maia is a casual and Caitlin is now a 3rd Year Apprentice Chef. Samir Fattouh from Georges River Grammar also works on a casual basis.

Catlin says “I’m so glad I got to study Hospitality at school. I had an amazing teacher Ms Kylie McDougall who inspired me. Work placement is a great opportunity. You get lots of hands-on experience and it helps you make a decision before you commit.”

MWLP’s Work Placement Manager, Michael Everett added “This is what happens when you get great hosts like Kyle from The Mill and introduce them to passionate students. It is so rewarding to see how often work placement works.”
