November Business of the Month – Bar Centrale

Bar Centrale on Queen Street in Campbelltown is not just a café. It is a community hub. The café is focused on providing quality food which is locally produced and sourced.

Owner/Operator Sonya Moulang has been a qualified chef for 25 years and bought the café two years ago. She launched the Pay It Forward initiative where customers are invited to pay for an extra coffee or meal with the idea of it being paid forward to help the homeless. Sonya has teamed up with The Nagle Centre and We Are Community who distribute coffee/meal vouchers to those less fortunate.

Sonya runs workshops and supports many other causes including White Ribbon Day.

She also has a passion for youth. Sonya offers Year 11 and 12 students who are studying Hospitality as part of their HSC an opportunity to learn ‘hands on’ in her cafe.

The students are treated as part of her team. They get involved in washing up, polishing cutlery, preparing salads, juices, assisting with cooking and customer service.

Sonya says “I studied Hospitality at school and later at TAFE and remember my work placement experiences. I wanted to ensure I created a good experience for students. I enjoy mentoring them and I treat them with respect. I tailor the work to suit the student with some students encouraged to invent their own dishes. Recently one student made her own speciality salad that sold out three days in a row.”

Sonya encourages other businesses to get involved in the MWLP Linking Youth Work Placement Program and give young people an opportunity to put what they are learning in the classroom to good use in the workforce. It is a win for both the business and the student.

Business of the Month winners are promoted on our website, Facebook and LinkedIn. Their article is published in our monthly e-newsletter which is distributed to hundreds of our stakeholders.

Winners also receive a gift voucher valued at $100.
